Warm water is considered a necessity in the modern world
There are many kinds of water heaters on the market. Knowing how to get the best one for your home isn’t easy. It requires understanding the strengths and weaknesses of each type and technology. The decision to replace a water heater with newer or entirely different technology becomes more complicated than just deciding if you want an electric or gas water heater. Couple this with the existence of refunds on energy savings.
Benjamin Waddy Maughan built a unique system called “geyser” in England. The essence of this structure was to let cold water through a pipe into a tank, which was heated from below by a gas burner. On the other side of the tank, the warm water was pouring into a bowl. Benjamin has not yet invented the boiler: on the one hand, its structure has not been able to store hot water. On the other hand, most of today’s classic boilers are powered by electricity.
However, in 1890, Norwegian-American mechanical engineer Edwin Ruud invented the classic boiler: at that time, his machine was gas-fired. He is the one considered the inventor of the boiler. For almost 130 years now, the water heater has been helping us get hot water at any time.
There are many important and less important aspects that you can use to choose a water heater. From energy consumption to color, anything can be a powerful argument. Yet, the most important thing is the capacity, how much water it can store, and how you can use it economically.
There is a rule of thumb that one person uses an average of 50 liters a day (brushing their teeth, part of the washing, bathing or doing the dishes, and taking a shower).
It is necessary to stop for a moment. 50 liters a day means 50 liters of water, including hot and cold water.
If you live alone (or with a partner), an 80-liter water heater will be plenty for you (or for the two of you). Although if you are a family of three, 80 liters will be just enough.
Suppose the water in the water heater is almost hot. In that case, the performance is almost at its peak, but mixing 80 liters of hot water with the cold will be enough for 2-3 people. However, you have to use the wasteful trick of always keeping the water warm.
There is a moment when we abandon the rule of thumb.
According to decades of experience, an average family of 4 needs 120 litre of hot water a day.
They might take several showers or take a bath, run the dishwasher and washing machine once or twice on an average day.
When you spend a lot at once on a water heater, the question of longevity is a concern. Fortunately, tank-style water heaters generally last 10 years on average.
The newest trend is to install a tankless water heating system that provides on-demand hot water to the whole household. They are more readily available, offer more cost-saving benefits, and have a smaller carbon footprint than tank-style water heaters. And they also tend to have a longer life span than tank-style water heaters.
Nowadays, water heaters can even learn your consumption habits and heat up the water when you need it. You do not heat the water unnecessarily when there is no water withdrawal, saving you energy costs. So it is just up to your qualified handyman who can help you choose the right that suits your needs in the long run.
